The Phelps road abandoned school wants a remodel. It has been in dilapidation for the past 27 years. At a time it was the Madison Heights High School likewise, for a different era it was Seminole Elementary school.
This history has many believing it should be on the National Register of Historic Places. However, there have been an abundance of fees, labor problems and issues with building . The price for demolition is cheaper when there are these inadequate finances.
Behind the school, in the former parking lot there is the Seminole Park. A little jungle gym and dirt area for tossing a ball. A lone jetting pole stand admits it all. The chain fence is prettied rusted away and a shopping cart sits nearby. The playgrounds blacktop is also a bit broken up with grass parts coming through.
Renovation may still be plausible even though the county building inspector did label it a hazard, the school was set on a fire and left without upkeep for a couple decades.
A remodeling LLC purchased the property in 2014 to do redo the old Phelps Road School into 30 to 50 apartment units so far they have failed to do so receiving fines in the process.
“The Phelps Road Abandoned School was the Madison Heights High School and the Seminole Elementary School.”
Also, the school was sold for a sum of $10 in 2009. Today it is just about breaking the bank of anyone trying to keep it together. It has been abandoned since the 1980’s and resides along Phelps Road in Madison Heights, Virginia.
As of July 2018, it stills stands.
